The Michael James Jackson Foundation for Brewing and Distilling has been promoting technical education and creating career opportunities for people of color in the brewing and distilling industries. Their scholarships have planted the seeds for real change in these industries by giving people of color opportunities to advance, innovate, and lead. Diversity and inclusivity makes beer better. Each year at the Craft Brewers Conference, Garrett and his team raise money to fund these scholarships. Past and present recipients have had a chance to gather at CBC and share with others what these scholarships have helped build. Thanks to the donations of so many wonderful companies, and individuals, in brewing and distilling, these dreams continue year after year. As the brewmaster of Brooklyn Brewery, and chairman of the MJF, Garrett Oliver has been breaking down barriers for decades. A multi award-winning brewer, author, and spokesperson, Garrett has helped with innovation in the industry. Recently, he’s brought attention to fonio, an ancient West African super grain, recognizing its potential in brewing. Collabs with Guinness, and brewing several fonio styles at Brooklyn Brewing, have brought this grain into the spotlight. Change starts with awareness. Garrett and the MJF have shaped the brewing and distilling landscape by fostering the growth of future leaders. An inclusive exchange of ideas, cultures, and experiences will always create the best atmosphere for these industries to continuously thrive.
